Thousands of miles separate Australia from the Tyrrhenian coast, and on 18 July they closed that distance entirely — trading a southern-hemisphere winter for the height of a Sicilian summer, and a familiar horizon for one of the most dramatic views on the island.
The Getting Ready
The day began at Hotel Eolian in Milazzo, where the town runs out along its narrow peninsula towards the sea and the Aeolian Islands sit hazy on the horizon. A destination wedding morning has its own energy: family and friends who have crossed oceans to be there, two time zones’ worth of anticipation finally condensing into a single afternoon.
Between the last details of dresses and jackets, the rooms of the Eolian filled with the easy laughter of people who knew exactly how far they had come for this day.
The Ceremony — Santuario di Tindari
Few churches in Sicily stand where the Santuario di Tindari stands. Home of the Black Madonna of Tindari and one of the island’s best-loved places of pilgrimage, the sanctuary rises on a cliff high above the Tyrrhenian Sea, looking down on the shifting sandbars of the Marinello lagoons. It is a view that stops Sicilians in their tracks, let alone guests seeing it for the first time.
Here, between sky and sea, Giann Luke and Roberta exchanged their vows in a religious ceremony.

The Reception — Villa Hera, Milazzo
Then the day changed register. Back in Milazzo, Villa Hera was waiting, and what followed was a celebration in the fullest Australian-meets-Sicilian sense: speeches that moved between laughter and tears, rivers of beer and cocktails, and a dance floor that never really emptied from the first song onward.
The evening peaked at the poolside cake cutting, when the sky above Villa Hera broke into fireworks and the light scattered across the water as Giann Luke and Roberta cut their cake with the whole party around them. Then, because nobody had crossed the planet to go to bed early, the music started again and carried everyone deep into the Sicilian night.
From Australia, to Sicily, to Film
This is what a destination wedding in Sicily can be: a morning by the sea, vows in a clifftop sanctuary, and a night of celebration that refuses to end. Our job was to be everywhere at once — the quiet exchanges during the ceremony, the roar of the speeches, the fireworks reflected in the pool — and to bring it all together in a film Giann Luke and Roberta can carry home across the world.
