Giann Luke & Roberta — A Destination Wedding in Sicily, from Australia
Some couples choose Sicily because it is close. Giann Luke and Roberta chose it from the other side of the world. Thousands of miles separate Australia from the Tyrrhenian coast, and on the 18th of July they closed that distance entirely — trading a southern-hemisphere winter for the height of a Sicilian summer, and a familiar horizon for one of the most dramatic views this island has to offer.
The Getting Ready
The day began at Hotel Eolian in Milazzo, where the town stretches out along its narrow peninsula toward the sea and the Aeolian Islands sit hazy on the horizon. There is a particular energy to a destination wedding morning — family and friends who have crossed oceans to be there, two time zones' worth of anticipation finally condensing into a single afternoon. Between the last details of dresses and jackets, the rooms of the Eolian filled with the easy laughter of people who knew exactly how far they had come for this day.
The Ceremony — Santuario di Tindari
Few churches in Sicily sit where the Santuario di Tindari sits. The sanctuary rises on a cliff high above the Tyrrhenian Sea, overlooking the shifting sandbars of the Marinello lagoons far below — a view that stops even Sicilians in their tracks, let alone guests seeing it for the first time. It was here, in one of the island's most beloved places of pilgrimage, that Giann Luke and Roberta exchanged their vows in a religious ceremony suspended between sky and sea.
For a wedding film, Tindari is a gift: the light off the water, the sweep of the coastline, the intimacy of the ceremony held inside a place that has drawn travellers for centuries. Some locations ask a videographer to work hard to find the frame. Tindari simply offers it.
The Reception — Villa Hera, Milazzo
Then the day changed register. Back in Milazzo, Villa Hera was waiting — and what followed was a celebration in the fullest Australian-meets-Sicilian sense of the word. Speeches that moved between laughter and tears. Rivers of beer and cocktails. A dance floor that never really emptied from the first song onward.
The evening reached its peak at the poolside cake cutting, when the sky above Villa Hera erupted in fireworks — light scattering across the water as Giann Luke and Roberta cut their cake with the whole party gathered around them. And then, because no one had crossed the planet to go to bed early, the music started again and carried everyone deep into the Sicilian night.
From Australia, to Sicily, to Film
This is what a destination wedding in Sicily can be: a morning by the sea, vows on a clifftop sanctuary, and a night of celebration that refuses to end. Our job was to be everywhere at once — the quiet exchanges during the ceremony, the roar of the speeches, the fireworks reflected in the pool — and to bring it all home in a film Giann Luke and Roberta can carry back across the world with them.
